Vega de la Motilla

Vega de la Motilla farm is dedicated to the production of avocados and lemons, located within a Mediterranean agroecosystem of high ecological complexity. The transition toward a regenerative model began in response to the challenges associated with production intensification, soil degradation, and pressure on water resources, with the aim of reconciling the farm’s economic viability with the conservation of a territory of high biological richness.

Over several years, the farm has undertaken a gradual transition based on the establishment of a permanent ground cover and the enhancement of key ecological processes. These practices have helped protect the soil from erosion, improve water infiltration and moisture retention, and strengthen soil structure and fertility, while simultaneously reducing dependence on external inputs within an intensive production system.

In parallel, specific measures have been implemented to enhance functional biodiversity and the associated ecosystem services. These include the installation of biodiversity infrastructure for pollinators, birds, bats, and beneficial fauna; the ecological management of field margins and non-productive areas; and the diversification of habitats across the farm. Together, these actions support biological pest control, pollination, and the overall resilience of the production system.

As a result, Vega de la Motilla has evolved toward a more balanced agricultural model, capable of maintaining high production levels while conserving an agroecosystem of significant ecological value. The farm stands as an example of how commercial agriculture can transition toward regenerative approaches that strengthen ecosystem services, protect biodiversity, and ensure long-term sustainability in Mediterranean contexts.
